In 2026, printed or powerloom "Sambalpuri-style" sarees can cost as little as ₹500 to ₹1,500. A handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree with ikat on the border and pallu usually costs about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000, and a cotton saree with more tie-dyed work in the body, such as all-over bandha or pasapalli checks, costs about ₹5,000 to ₹12,500. A Sambalpuri silk saree with ikat borders and a simpler body usually costs about ₹7,500 to ₹15,000, and silk pieces with all-over bandha, pasapalli or tissue silk cost about ₹15,000 to ₹35,000. These ranges are indicative and vary by seller. The fibre, the yarn count and how much of the saree is tied and dyed decide the price.

What drives the price of a Sambalpuri
Cotton or silk
Sambalpuri is woven in both cotton and silk. Silk yarn costs more than cotton, so a silk Sambalpuri usually costs several times a cotton one with similar motifs.
How much is tied and dyed
Sambalpuri is a bandha (tie-and-dye ikat) weave: the yarn is tied and dyed in sections before weaving, so the pattern appears as the cloth is woven. A saree with ikat only on the border and pallu needs far less tying than one with bandha across the whole body. In single ikat, only one set of threads is tied and dyed. In double ikat, both the lengthwise and crosswise threads are, which takes much longer to plan and weave.
Yarn count
Finer cotton yarn means more threads in the same width, a smoother feel and more work on the loom. Ask the seller for the count where it is listed.
Motifs
Common motifs include shankha (conch), chakra (wheel), phula (flower), rudraksha and pasapalli, a chessboard check inspired by the game of pasa. Small, sharp motifs and pasapalli checks across the body take more tying than a few large motifs.
Tissue silk
Tissue silk is woven with metallic zari threads for a shimmering finish, which adds to the cost of a silk Sambalpuri.
How to spot a genuine Sambalpuri
- Look at both sides. In a handloom Sambalpuri the yarn is dyed before weaving, so the pattern shows on both sides. A printed saree is bright on the front and faded on the back.
- Look at the motif edges. Hand ikat has slightly blurred, feathered edges. Very crisp, identical edges everywhere suggest printing or a machine.
- Look for small irregularities. Slight variations in weave or colour are a sign of handwork, not a defect.
- Check the silk. A burnt silk thread smells like burnt hair and leaves soft ash. Synthetic thread melts into a hard bead. A Silk Mark label, where present, confirms pure silk.
- Ask where it was woven. Sambalpuri Bandha saree and fabrics are GI-tagged and woven in western Odisha, in Sambalpur, Bargarh and Sonepur (Subarnapur).

How to care for a Sambalpuri
Silk: dry clean only. Store it wrapped in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, away from moisture. Refold it every few months so any zari does not crack along the folds. Do not spray perfume directly on silk. Iron on low heat with a cloth in between.
Cotton: for the first wash, dry clean or hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent, as handloom dyes may bleed slightly. Dry in shade. Iron on medium heat; light starch keeps cotton crisp.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a Sambalpuri cotton saree in 2026?
A handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree with ikat on the border and pallu usually costs about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 in 2026. Cotton sarees with all-over bandha, pasapalli checks or finer yarn cost about ₹5,000 to ₹12,500. These ranges are indicative.
What is the price of a Sambalpuri silk saree in 2026?
A handloom Sambalpuri silk saree with ikat borders and a simpler body usually costs about ₹7,500 to ₹15,000 in 2026. Silk pieces with all-over bandha, pasapalli or tissue silk cost about ₹15,000 to ₹35,000.
Why is a Sambalpuri silk saree more expensive than a cotton one?
Silk yarn costs more than cotton, and silk Sambalpuri sarees often have more of the body tied and dyed. More tying means more hours before the saree even goes on the loom.
How can I tell a handloom Sambalpuri from a printed one?
Turn it over. In a handloom Sambalpuri the yarn is dyed before weaving, so the pattern shows on both sides with slightly blurred edges. A printed saree is bright on the front and pale on the back.
What does pasapalli mean in a Sambalpuri saree?
Pasapalli is a chessboard check inspired by the game of pasa. It is one of the best known Sambalpuri motifs and is woven in both cotton and silk sarees.
