What is a raw silk saree?

Raw silk is silk that is not fully degummed. Keeping some of the natural gum gives the fabric a natural texture, a slight crispness and a matte sheen, with gentle slubs you can see and feel. Unlike glossy, heavy wedding silks, raw silk has a quieter, textured look.

Why choose raw silk

  • Holds pleats: the crisp fabric keeps its pleats neat through the day.
  • Matte sheen: a soft glow rather than a high shine.
  • Texture: gentle slubs give each saree character.
  • Handloom: small irregularities in weave or colour are a natural sign of handwork.

Popular designs in this collection

Contrast borders define this collection. There are temple borders on purple and yellow and on lime green and purple sarees, a plain lime green and purple saree, a royal blue and orange saree, and a black saree with checks on the body and a Ganga Jamuna border.

How to identify genuine raw silk

Look and feel for the slubs and slight crispness that come from silk that is not fully degummed. A burning test on a single thread smells like burnt hair if it is pure silk.

When to wear it

Raw silk suits festivals, family functions, office events and evening gatherings. Because it holds pleats so well, it looks neat for long events.

How to care for it

Dry clean only. Store wrapped in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, away from moisture. Refold every few months, keep perfume off the silk and iron on low heat with a cloth in between.
