What is a Sambalpuri silk saree?

A Sambalpuri saree is woven in western Odisha, in clusters around Sambalpur, Bargarh and Sonepur (Subarnapur). Sambalpuri Bandha saree and fabrics are GI-tagged. "Bandha" is Odisha's name for tie-and-dye ikat: the yarn is tied and dyed in sections before weaving, so the motifs form as the cloth comes off the loom. Sambalpuri is woven in silk and cotton; this collection is all pure silk.

Popular designs and motifs

  • Shankha: the conch.
  • Chakra: the wheel.
  • Phula: the flower.
  • Rudraksha: a traditional Sambalpuri motif.
  • Pasapalli: a chessboard check inspired by the game of pasa, seen here on the pink saree's border.

The collection also includes a dark pink and black saree with a kumbha design, two-tone silks in black and red, pink and turquoise blue, and sky blue and maroon, and a yellow and white aswini saree.

Sambalpuri tissue silk

Four sarees here are Sambalpuri tissue silk, in burnt orange and black, black and orange, red and turquoise, and aqua blue and pink. Tissue silk is woven with metallic zari threads, which gives a sheer, shimmering finish on top of the ikat.

How to identify a genuine handloom Sambalpuri saree

Because the yarn is dyed before weaving, the pattern shows on both sides, and motif edges look slightly soft. A burning test on a single thread smells like burnt hair for pure silk. Small irregularities in weave or colour are a natural sign of handwork.

When to wear it

Sambalpuri silk suits festivals, family functions, office events and evening gatherings. The tissue silk pieces lean more festive.

How to care for it

Dry clean only. Wrap in soft cotton or muslin, keep away from moisture, refold every few months and iron on low heat with a cloth in between.
