Pure Silk Saree
Pure silk handloom sarees woven in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The range runs from Kanjivaram and Banarasi katan for weddings to Pochampally ikat, Sambalpuri, Berhampuri, Uppada and Venkatagiri silks for festivals and family functions, with raw and soft silk too. Odisha's Khandua patta, in sankha, pasapalli and kathiphera designs, makes up a large share of the collection.
Pure silk sarees: choosing by weight and occasion
Pure silk weaves feel very different from one another. Some are heavy with zari, others are light enough for a long day. Here is how the weaves in this collection compare.
- Heavy, zari-rich: Kanjivaram from Kanchipuram, with korvai-joined borders; Banarasi katan from Varanasi, with jaal and kadhua work; Paithani from Paithan, with a tapestry-woven pallu.
- Interlocked borders: Gadwal silk from Telangana, with kupadam borders and pallu.
- Light with zari: Uppada jamdani from Andhra Pradesh, and the fine, airy Venkatagiri weave.
- Ikat: Pochampally from Telangana, Sambalpuri bandha and Khandua patta from Odisha.
- Temple border: Berhampuri patta, with its phoda kumbha border and pallu.
- Shimmer and texture: tissue silk woven with metallic zari, crisp raw silk, and fluid soft silk.
How to check pure silk
The traditional check is a burning test on a single thread: pure silk smells like burnt hair. In zari sarees such as Kanjivaram, genuine silk zari has a silk core thread.
