What drives the price of a Banarasi
Base fabric
Katan is pure silk made by twisting silk filaments, which gives a smooth, strong fabric. It costs more than georgette, organza, cotton or blended bases, and much more than art silk.
Kadhua or cutwork
In kadhua (kadwa) weaving, each motif is woven separately by hand, so there are no loose threads at the back. It is the most labour-intensive method. In cutwork, the extra thread runs across the back and the floats are cut away afterwards, which is faster and cheaper. Two sarees that look alike from the front can differ a lot in price because of this.
Zari
Real zari made with silver adds weight and cost, and its price follows silver rates. Tested zari looks similar for much less. Ask the seller which one is used.
Design density and colours
A jaal is an all-over net of motifs. A jaal or a dense brocade takes far longer than a few buttis on a plain body. Meenakari, where extra coloured silk threads are added during weaving, also adds time.
Handloom or powerloom
A powerloom copies the look in a fraction of the time, which is why Banarasi-style sarees can cost a few thousand rupees while handloom katan pieces start in the five figures.
How to spot a genuine Banarasi
- Turn it over. Kadhua motifs are finished one by one, so the back is neat. Cut threads behind each motif point to cutwork. A perfectly uniform back with a bonded feel points to a powerloom.
- Look for small irregularities. A handloom saree shows slight variations in the weave. Perfect regularity across six yards suggests a machine.
- Ask for the base fabric by name. "Katan silk", "georgette" or "organza" is a real answer. "Banarasi silk" on its own is not.
- Check the silk. A burnt silk thread smells like burnt hair and leaves soft ash. Synthetic thread melts into a hard bead. A Silk Mark label, where present, confirms pure silk.
- Ask where it was woven. Banaras Brocades and Sarees is a GI-tagged product of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

How to care for a Banarasi

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a pure silk Banarasi saree in 2026?
A handloom Banarasi in pure katan silk with tested zari and buttis usually costs about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 in 2026. Dense kadhua jaal pieces cost about ₹25,000 to ₹80,000, and real silver zari kadhua sarees cost about ₹80,000 to ₹2.5 lakh and more. These ranges are indicative.
What is katan silk in a Banarasi saree?
Katan is pure silk made by twisting silk filaments together, which gives a smooth, strong fabric. It is the traditional base for pure silk Banarasi sarees woven in Varanasi.
What is the difference between kadhua and cutwork Banarasi?
In a kadhua Banarasi each motif is woven separately by hand, so the back is neat with no loose threads. In cutwork the extra thread runs across the back and is trimmed, which is faster. Kadhua usually costs more for a similar design.
Why are some Banarasi sarees so cheap online?
Most Banarasi-style sarees priced at a few thousand rupees are made on a powerloom with art silk or blends and imitation zari. A handloom saree in pure katan silk takes weeks to months to weave and costs more.
How can I tell if a Banarasi saree is handwoven?
Turn it over and look at the back of the motifs, and look for small irregularities in the weave. Ask the seller to name the base fabric and the technique, and check the silk with a burn test on a thread.
