What drives the price of a Kanjivaram

Silk weight

Kanjivaram is woven in heavy mulberry silk. An original Kanchipuram silk saree usually weighs about 800 to 1,100 grams, while duplicates sold as silk often weigh about 600 grams. More silk means a higher price.

Zari

Pure zari is silk thread wrapped with silver and coated with gold, so its cost follows silver and gold prices. Tested zari looks similar but uses cheaper metal. Some zari also has less gold and silver than it appears to, so ask what you are paying for.

Korvai and contrast borders

In a traditional Kanjivaram, the border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked with the body (the korvai technique), so they do not come apart. Weaving a contrast border this way needs more hands and time than a border woven in one colour with the body.

Design density

Temple borders, checks, stripes, peacocks, mangoes (paisley), rudraksha and annam (swan) are common motifs. Small buttis on a plain body cost less than a densely woven body or a wide zari border.

Time on the loom

A pure silk Kanjivaram can take 10 to 15 days on the loom, and bridal pieces with heavier zari take longer.

How to spot a genuine Kanjivaram

  • Check where it was woven. Kanchipuram Silk is GI-tagged, so a saree sold as Kanchipuram silk should come from the Kanchipuram region.
  • Check the border join. In a korvai saree the border is interlocked with the body and will not separate. Where the pallu is woven separately and joined, there is often a zigzag line at the join.
  • Look at the zari core. Genuine silk zari has a silk core thread. Kanchipuram also has a zari testing unit that checks gold and silver content for a small fee.
  • Do a burn test on a thread. Pure silk smells like burnt hair and leaves a soft, crushable ash. Synthetic thread melts into a hard bead.
  • Feel the weight. A very light saree sold as heavy bridal Kanjivaram is a mismatch.
  • Do not rely on one label alone. A Silk Mark label confirms pure silk, but the logo has been copied onto duplicates, so combine it with the checks above.

How to care for a Kanjivaram

Dry clean only. Store it wrapped in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, away from moisture. Refold it every few months so the zari does not crack along the folds. Do not spray perfume directly on the silk or zari. Iron on low heat with a cloth in between.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a pure silk Kanjivaram saree in 2026?

A handloom Kanjivaram in pure silk with tested zari and lighter work usually costs about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 in 2026. Korvai pieces with heavier zari cost about ₹25,000 to ₹65,000, and bridal pure zari sarees cost about ₹65,000 to ₹1.5 lakh and more. These ranges are indicative.

Why are Kanjivaram sarees so expensive?

A Kanjivaram uses heavy mulberry silk, often close to a kilo, along with zari whose price follows silver and gold. The korvai technique and dense motifs add days or weeks on the loom.

Is a soft silk saree the same as a Kanjivaram?

No. Soft silk is a lightweight pure silk with a fluid drape and lighter zari than a traditional Kanjivaram. It is easier to wear for long hours and usually costs less, but it is not the heavy Kanchipuram silk that the GI tag covers.

What is the difference between pure zari and tested zari?

Pure zari is silk thread wrapped with silver and coated with gold, so it costs more and lasts well. Tested zari looks similar but uses cheaper metal, which is why sarees with tested zari cost less.

How can I check if a Kanjivaram saree is genuine?

Check that the border is interlocked with the body, look for a silk core in the zari, and burn-test a thread for the smell of burnt hair. Kanchipuram Silk is GI-tagged, so ask the seller where the saree was woven.
