A red and black handloom cotton Sambalpuri saree from western Odisha, with bold pasapalli check motifs woven in the bandha (ikat) technique, red vertical panels set against a black body, finely woven white motifs and a richly patterned Sambalpuri pallu. It is light and breathable, a good pick for office days, temple visits and festive family gatherings.

Design details

  • Body: Black body with vibrant red vertical panels and finely woven white motifs.
  • Motifs: Pasapalli checks and bandha (ikat) patterns, formed in the yarn before weaving rather than printed.
  • Pallu: Detailed pallu with classic Sambalpuri motifs.
  • Fabric: Soft handloom cotton with a light drape and a crisp texture.
  • Blouse: No blouse piece is included.

Occasions and styling

This cotton Sambalpuri saree suits office wear, daily wear in the summer months and casual festive days such as temple visits or cultural programmes. As no blouse piece comes with it, pair it with a plain red cotton blouse and oxidised silver jewellery to echo the white motifs on the black.

About Sambalpuri Bandha

Sambalpuri Bandha is a GI-tagged ikat from western Odisha, woven in Sambalpur, Bargarh and Sonepur (Subarnapur). In bandha, the yarns are tied and resist-dyed in sections before they go on the loom, so the design forms as the weaver works. Pasapalli, one of its best known motifs, is a chessboard check inspired by the game of pasa.

Care

For the first wash, dry clean or hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent, as handloom dyes may bleed slightly. Dry in shade. Iron on medium heat, and a light starch will keep the cotton crisp.
