A black and red Nabakothi Nuapatna handloom cotton saree with a pasapalli border, from Odisha. The black body is woven as a Nabakothi grid of red-lined panels, each holding an ikat motif such as an elephant, deer, fish, peacock or flower in yellow, red and white. The maroon pallu carries rows of swans and peacocks in yellow and pink, and the red border is patterned with pasapalli checks. It suits office wear, festivals, pujas and daytime functions.

  • Fabric: Cotton, woven on a handloom.

Occasions and styling

Nuapatna cotton is light and breathable, so this saree works for office wear, pujas, festivals and daytime family functions. The yellow motifs on black pair well with gold or antique gold jewellery, or keep it simple with silver.

About Nabakothi and pasapalli

Nabakothi, meaning nine chambers, is a classic Odia layout in which the body is divided into a grid of boxes, each filled with a motif. Pasapalli is a chequered pattern named after the board of pasa, a traditional dice game. Both are woven in Nuapatna, Cuttack district, using the bandha tie-and-dye ikat technique, in which the yarns are resist-dyed before weaving.

Care

Dry clean for the first wash. After that, hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not soak for long or wring tightly. Dry in the shade to protect the colours, and iron on medium heat on the reverse side.
