A grey and red Nabakothi Nuapatna handloom cotton saree from Odisha. The soft grey body is woven as a Nabakothi grid of maroon-lined panels, each holding an ikat motif such as a fish, lotus, conch or elephant in red and white. The red pallu carries rows of swans and peacocks in pink and white, and a red border with white ikat motifs frames the saree. It suits office wear, festivals, pujas and daytime functions.

  • Border: Red border with small white ikat motifs.
  • Fabric: Cotton, woven on a handloom.

Occasions and styling

The muted grey body makes this one of the easier Nabakothi sarees to wear to the office, while the red pallu keeps it festive enough for pujas and family functions. Pair it with the red blouse and silver or pearl jewellery.

About Nabakothi and Nuapatna ikat

Nuapatna in Cuttack district, Odisha, is one of the state's best-known ikat weaving centres and the home of Khandua silk. Its weavers use the bandha tie-and-dye technique, in which the yarns are resist-dyed in sections before weaving, so the pattern appears as the cloth is woven. Nabakothi, meaning nine chambers, is a classic Odia layout in which the body is divided into a grid of boxes, each filled with a motif.

Care

Dry clean for the first wash. After that, hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not soak for long or wring tightly. Dry in the shade to protect the colours, and iron on medium heat on the reverse side.
