Cotton saree
Handloom cotton sarees from weaving clusters in Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal. The collection brings together Sambalpuri and Nuapatna ikat from Odisha, Pochampally mercerised cotton ikat from Telangana, and khadi, cotton tissue and embroidered Bengal cotton sarees from West Bengal. They are light, breathable and easy to drape, and suit office wear, daily wear, summer and casual festive days.
What is a handloom cotton saree?
A handloom cotton saree is woven in cotton yarn on a hand-operated loom by a weaver. Because it is made by hand, small irregularities in the weave or colour are a natural sign of handwork, not a defect. Cotton breathes well, which makes it the most practical saree for hot weather and long days.
Cotton weaves in this collection
- Sambalpuri cotton: woven in western Odisha (Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur) in bandha, Odisha's tie-and-dye ikat. Look for pasapalli checks, flower, elephant and tribal motifs. A GI-tagged weave.
- Nuapatna cotton: from the Nuapatna weaving cluster in Cuttack district, Odisha, known for bold tie-dye ikat motifs and pasapalli borders.
- Pochampally mercerised cotton: GI-tagged Pochampally Ikat from Telangana, woven in mercerised yarn that is smoother and more lustrous, with colours that stay brighter.
- Khadi cotton: hand-spun and handwoven, slightly textured, and softer with every wash.
- Cotton tissue: cotton woven with zari or metallic threads for a subtle shimmer, festive yet light.
- Bengal cotton: light, crisp handloom cotton from West Bengal, here with contrast kantha stitch blouse pieces or white flower embroidery.
How to identify a genuine handloom cotton saree
In hand ikat such as Sambalpuri, Nuapatna and Pochampally, the yarn is resist-dyed in sections before weaving, so each motif has a slightly blurred edge. That soft edge is a mark of hand ikat. Khadi shows a gentle hand-spun texture, and every handloom saree may have small variations in weave or colour.
When to wear a cotton saree
Cotton sarees are made for office, daily wear and summer, and the brighter ikats and cotton tissues work well for casual festive days. Pair a red and black Sambalpuri with oxidised silver jewellery, or wear a pastel cotton tissue with a contrast blouse and light gold-tone earrings.
How to care for a cotton saree
For the first wash, dry clean or hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent, as handloom dyes may bleed slightly. Dry in shade. Iron on medium heat; a light starch keeps cotton crisp.
